What is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual direction can be described as a holy listening for the voice of God in your daily life or in seasons of life. It is a three part relationship between the director, directee, and God to co-discern how the directee may grow in listening to the voice of love in the presence of a fully-attuned listener. A spiritual director is skilled in being curious, and can offer reflective questions, observations, and invitations as a companion to the directee as they long for deeper knowledge of themselves and God. Maybe going to church has become stale or rote, or you find it hard to pray, or you have questions or doubts about your faith. Maybe it's the nagging sense that something has shifted within, and you don't have the words to describe it; something about the 'old way' no longer fits, but the new way hasn't fully revealed itself. Spiritual direction can be considered a ministry of clarification and hospitality as we take a closer look at what is emerging within your soul, seeking God for next steps. Think of your life with God as a kind of interior topography, where we visit different 'places' and types of 'terrain' throughout life. A Spiritual Director can help you notice the 'ground' underneath you, the 'landscape', or even the flowers, grass, caves and valleys, and how they create a map of your soul for you to see, understand, and navigate, as you walk this life with God.
